How to Test Your Water for Lead
Checking your service line material (which this site helps with) tells you whether lead pipe is present. It doesn't tell you how much lead, if any, is actually in your water right now — that depends on water chemistry, how long water sits in the pipe, and other factors that vary day to day. If you want an actual measurement, here's how.
1. Ask your water utility first
Many public water systems offer free or low-cost lead testing directly to residents, especially since the federal Lead and Copper Rule Revisions put more pressure on utilities to identify and address lead exposure. This is usually the cheapest and most reliable starting point — contact information for your specific utility is on your water bill, or findable through your local government's website.
2. A certified laboratory test
For a result you can actually rely on and act on, use a laboratory certified for lead testing in your state (your state or local health department can point you to one). A typical process:
- The lab sends you a sample bottle and instructions.
- You'll usually take a "first draw" sample — water that has sat in the pipes for several hours (e.g., first thing in the morning, before running any water) — since that's when lead levels tend to be highest.
- You mail the sample back and get a real, quantified result, typically within a couple of weeks.
3. Home test kits — a real caveat
Inexpensive home test kits exist, but the ones using simple color-change strips are generally far less sensitive than a lab test and can miss lead at levels that still matter for health, particularly for children. If you use one, treat a clean result as inconclusive rather than reassuring, and a positive result as a real reason to get a certified lab test to confirm it.
While you wait for results
If you're concerned, running the cold tap for a minute or two before using water for drinking or cooking (especially first thing in the morning) and avoiding hot tap water for cooking or infant formula are commonly recommended precautions — lead dissolves more readily into hot, stagnant water. These are reasonable interim steps, not a substitute for an actual test or, if confirmed, service line replacement.
